Top international business courses in the Netherlands (2026)

7 January 2026

What will you study?

As the name suggests, International Business focuses on the world of global business. In the first year, you build a solid foundation with subjects such as marketing, finance, management, economics, sales, and statistics. You will also learn about cultural differences between countries and how these impact business and corporate communication. A good knowledge of English is essential, which is why English is the language of instruction in all programs.

Most applied universities also offer one or two additional languages, such as German, French, or Spanish. Many programs require – or at least strongly recommend – an internship or a minor abroad during the third year.

There is a strong focus on practical experience; students often work with real clients. For example, at HZ University, in the second year, students create their own student-run company together with classmates.

Differences Between Universities (Applied)

Almost all universities offering applied programs have an IB course. What are the differences? At some institutions, you can choose multiple languages, such as at Avans University in Den Bosch (up to 5 languages). Most schools offer French, German, Spanish, or Dutch. But in The Hague (THUAS), for example, you can also choose Chinese, Japanese, or Portuguese.

Not into languages? At HZ, you can choose not to learn another language and instead immerse yourself in the world of international business.

So, if you are interested in a specific language, check where you can study it! If you prefer not to add any language, HZ University (ranked #1) is the best choice for you.

After the first or second year, you specialize in a field. The most common specializations are finance, organization and change, marketing and sales, language and culture, and supply chain management.

At Saxion University (ranked #5), for example, you choose a specialization with a particular focus on:

  • Languages
  • Technology and innovation (unique!)
  • Entrepreneurship
  • International trade

Sustainability (Sustainable Business)

Most programs also focus on sustainable entrepreneurship in line with the Sustainable Development Goals: they consider the consequences of international trade for people and the environment. For example, Van Hall Larenstein University offers an in-depth sustainability semester in the third year. In The Hague, you can choose sustainable business, but a “minor” (specialization) in trade with emerging economies in Africa, Asia, and Latin America is also offered.

At Windesheim University, it is possible to earn a double degree in collaboration with the University of Munich.

Differences Between Universities (Research)

At Maastricht, after the first year, the focus shifts to emerging markets, such as Russia and China.

In Rotterdam, on the other hand, in the third year you can choose a specialization; the topics vary from year to year.

At the University of Twente, significant emphasis is placed on the role of technology in the context of international business.

Nyenrode places a strong focus on developing personal leadership and also integrates sports into the program, to strengthen skills such as teamwork and discipline.
