In the guide you can also find information about the Netherlands. Our founder Lonnie Holders was interviewed for the guide by journalist Enrico Marro, and Hanna Dinkelbach (International Office) from the University of Twente in the Netherlands is also mentioned.
The Netherlands has become a popular destination for international students who want to continue their studies with a Master’s degree. The quality of education, the innovative approach, and the wide range of courses are just some of the reasons to choose to study here.
3 Types of Master’s programs
In the Netherlands, you can find different types of Master’s programs, including:
- Academic Master’s: Focused on research and advanced skills in specific fields.
- Professional Master’s: Oriented toward practical application and professional skills.
- Research Master’s: 100% research-based, mostly working independently and preparing optimally for a PhD.
Admission requirements
To be admitted to a Master’s program in the Netherlands, you generally need a recognized bachelor’s degree. Depending on the program, specific requirements may also be requested, such as a portfolio or relevant work experience. Therefore, it can be a somewhat demanding path. It is important to start early!
What is a Pre-Master?
A Pre-Master is a preparatory program for students who do not meet the requirements for direct admission to a Master’s program. This course provides the necessary skills to successfully complete the chosen Master’s. Finishing the Pre-Master guarantees direct access to the Master’s program of your choice.
How do I know if I need a Pre-Master?
You can request an eligibility check from the Going Dutch staff, so you can get an idea in advance whether you have a chance of being admitted. Another option is simply to submit your application and wait for the response from the university you applied to.
Application
The application procedure may vary, but it usually includes submitting your university transcript with a good average grade, a motivation letter, a summary of your thesis, a CV, reference letters, language test scores such as IELTS or TOEFL, and in some cases a GMAT. It is important to respect the deadlines to ensure proper evaluation of your application.
Pursuing a Master’s in the Netherlands represents a unique opportunity to expand your knowledge and build an international career. With a wide variety of programs and a welcoming environment, the Netherlands is ready to host you on your academic journey!
